Latin name: Juniperus communis Botanical family : Cupressaceae Plant part used: Fruit, ripe Extraction method: Steam Distillation Aroma: Piney, balsamic CHEMICAL FAMILIES Monoterpenes - 86% Sequiterpenes - 2% NOTES ON CHEMICAL COMPONENTS The chemistry of juniper berry is considered more complex than the oil extracted from the leaves and twigs, and is suggested for aromatherapy use. Juniper berry is rich in monoterpenes and some sesquiterpenes. The monoterpenes easily penetrate the skin and contribute to juniper berry's especially useful effect in massage oils. SAFETY DATA Nontoxic, though it may cause skin irritation or sensitisation if OXIDIZED. Use in low dilution when applying to the skin such as in bath or massage oils. Some literature claims that juniper is contraindicated in pregnancy and kidney disease. These sources are likely referring to an oil extracted from a different species of juniper, perhaps juniperus sabina. Tisserand states that theclaims against juniper communis are not supported by research nor the specific oil's chemistry. THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES Anti - infectious, anti-inflammatory Anti rheumatic - prevents and/or relieves chronic rheumatic pain and swelling. Provides rubifacient effect (generates localized increase in blood flow and circulation by irritation of skin, will often reduce pain and swelling) not for acute symptoms, analgesic, warming.
